Virtual Seminar: Public Investment Planning with a Water-Energy-Food Nexus Approach
The objective of the Virtual Seminar "Planning public investments with a Water-Energy-Food Nexus approach" was to present a methodological tool that considers the alignment or integration of the Nexus approach, between water, energy and food, to the design of plans, policies and projects in a practical way, improving decision-making in public management, showing case examples from LAC countries, providing an opportunity to discuss these experiences and reflect on the Nexus approach in national water management plans. The introductory presentation was given by Jeannette Sanchez, Director, Natural Resources Division, ECLAC. Afterward, Antonio Levy, Regional Nexo Coordinator, GIZ, presented the "Nexo Program for Latin America and the Caribbean". The Nexo methodology and examples of its practical uses were presented by Barbara Willaarts, Senior Regional Nexo Consultant of ECLAC and Elisa Blanco, Nexo Specialist at the national level respectively. The open discussion round focused on the following questions:
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of adopting the nexus, and why is it important to reduce barriers that may prevent the implementation of this approach in Latin American and Caribbean countries?
- How to ensure financial support or the sustainability of public investment for the adoption of policies with a Nexus approach?
The seminar was attended by 54 participants from 9 countries (Botswana, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, USA, Mexico, Panama, United Kingdom and Uruguay, as well as representatives from IDB, GIZ and ECLAC.
