Environmental Management Act (2009) of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

This Act aims at providing the guidelines and assigning the administrative responsibilities for environmental management and related activities.

The purposes of this Act are to provide for:

(a) the allocation and coordination of administrative responsibilities for environmental management within the State;

(b) the prevention and mitigation of pollution of the environment, for the purposes of protecting human health and maintaining the quality of the environment

(c) the conservation of energy and the development of renewable energy resources;

(d) the integration of environmental management and monitoring.
 

For the administration of this Act, it is established under the Ministry for the time being responsible for the Environment, a department to be known as the Department of the Environment. This entity is responsible, among other things,  for the continuous and long-term assessment of the status of natural resources and of pollution, environmental degradation and other adverse impacts on the environment; also, he Department of the Environment must to coordinate, monitor and ensure the protection and sustainable use of natural resources for the benefit of the present and future generations. 

In addition, this Act establishes the National Environmental Commission as an advisory entity on sustainable development issues.
